Age Concern Supports New National Older Peoples Fire Safety Strategy

Age Concern is contributing to a new national Fire and Rescue Service strategy which aims to keep older people safe from death and injury caused by fire in their homes

The strategy will focus on:

  • earlier, targeted intervention methods;
  • providing information and advice; and
  • improving and maintaining awareness of the dangers of fire, particularly for people with a mental or physical disability or sensory impairment and those who care for them.

A draft is expected by late summer, 2010.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is leading strategy development on behalf of the Chief Fire Officer’s Association.

Organisations representing the full range of caring agencies, including Age Concern, will provide the Fire and Rescue Service with guidance on the needs of older people.

Representatives of different parts of the community are also involved, adding an external perspective to make sure the strategy is suitable for the people it is meant to help.
